CMDI challenges students’ mathematical abilities

The Senior High School (SHS) and college students of CARD-MRI Development Institute, Inc. (CMDI) unleashed their mathematical prowess once again in the annual Mathematics challenge dubbed as “MeetheMATHricks” at its main campus in Brgy. Tranca, Bay, Laguna on March 20 to 21, 2018.

Formerly “MATHinik”, this year’s theme is “Challenge your Inner Geek” and aims to promote Math among students; enhance understanding in various areas of Mathematics and other related fields; test and enhance students’ mathematical knowledge and analytical skills through a competitive but friendly and fun academic activities; and promote camaraderie.

“Mathematics has been stereotyped as one of the difficult subjects and most students hate it. To conquer students’ fear of Mathematics, we must be involved to encourage and motivate them to participate and learn,” said Ms. Rona Angulo, CMDI Program Officer.

The two-day event included quiz contests on General Mathematics, Business Mathematics, Statistics, Algebra, Accounting, Organization and Management, Economics, as well as Physical and Biological Sciences; Spoken Poemathry (spoken poetry); Melodic Math (math song composition); Math Can See Your Voice (singing contest); Mathematically Speaking (speech choir); Smarth Art (poster making contest); and Scavenger’s Math Race.

Grade 11 students Hannah Baloncio and Joyzle Mariano were the champions in the General Mathematics quiz while college students Robielyn Villamor, Michelle Agan, and Grade 11 students Kimberly Banaag and Jahnzel Manalo bested others in the Business Mathematics quiz.

Moreover, college students Veronica Empleo, Janice Palacio, and Grade 12 students Erica Lanao and Jewella Luistro got the top spot in the Statistics category.

Jaicel Gecolea and Shaira Ilagan excelled in the College Algebra quiz and accumulated 56 points out of 90. Grade 12 students Rein Romari Malabana and Marinela Hernandez earned 66 points to win the Physical Science category while Mary Joy Valencia and Leah Coner aced the Biological Science quiz. Edrian Banania and Mike Diane Chelle Vio championed in the Economics quiz category.

For the SHS individual category, Venus Morete, Hannah Baloncio, and Harlene Reyes clinched the top spot in Business Mathematics, Accounting, and Organization and Management, respectively.

Students are not only good in solving equations and Math problems, but are also versatile in speaking, writing, singing, and drawing. Harlene Reyes bagged the first place in “Spoken Poemathry” where she impressed the crowd and clearly expressed her thoughts as she delivered her winning poetry piece.

Jahnzel Manalo composed the winning “Melodic Math Song” while Laarnie Flores was hailed as the best singer in “Math Can See Your Voice”.

Grade 12 Philippines bagged the first place in “Mathematically Speaking” for a powerful speech choir performance. Again, Edrian Banania stood out in “Smarth Art” for his impressive artwork.

Cooperation pushed Team D, composed of Venus Morete, April Calinao, Benedic Lustado, Gabriel Paran, Nicole Magtibay, Monique Villegas, and Zyra Bañadera, to win the first place in “Scavenger’s Math Race” where they played Sudoku and Rubik’s cube.

“We had a lot of fun with the meaningful activities. At the same time, we acquired new learnings and experiences,” expressed Bryan Russel Borgonia, Grade 11 student. “This program does not only focus on enhancing our mathematical capabilities, but it also teaches us positive values such as teamwork and discipline,” said another student Janine Parlejo.

Engr. Micky Kalaw, Mathematics Instructor, sincerely appreciated all students and faculty members who devoted their time, support, and effort for the event’s success.
